Wining and dining at the Skycity Grand Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand

Hello my lovely readers! Today I wanted to share with you an amazing hotel called the Skycity Grand Hotel, we stayed here for a few nights when we last visited New Zealand. If you aren’t a regular reader of The Wild Hideaway – my partner Dave is from New Zealand so we are often back and forth between there and Australia.

Conveniently located within easy reach of all attractions, the Skycity Grand Hotel is an ideal and super luxurious base to stop when in Auckland.

Getting to the Skycity Grand Hotel Auckland

The Skycity Grand Hotel is in an amazing location, it’s very easy to get in and out of the CBD. The hotel is very close to lots of yummy restaurants, bars and beautiful shops.

The location of this hotel is perfectly positioned in the heart of the city and across from the Sky Tower and Casino. Access from the motorway system is easy, and you can either valet or self-park.

The facilities at the Skycity Grand Hotel

The rooms at the Skycity Grand Hotel are clean, well maintained and the views are quite spectacular for those facing the harbour. Amenities include a large television with satellite service (premium channels and movie hire), refrigerator, minibar, coffee maker, pillow menu, desk, and separate bathtub and shower.

Dave and I were celebrating our anniversary the weekend that we stayed, the staff at Skycity Grand Hotel had left us a hand written card with chocolates and champagne which was such a lovely gesture!

A few extra points to note:

  • Excellent room service menu
  • Heated indoor 25-metre lap pool
  • Sauna and spa pool
  • In-room coffee machines with surprisingly quality coffee pods!
  • Guest rooms have free wireless Internet access with no cap on data downloads
  • There is a shuttle which runs on the hour to the airport which can be arranged by the concierge
  • The rooms are a decent size with on trend amenities
  • The hotel is also very close to lots of restaurants, bars and shops

Dining options near Skycity Grand Hotel Auckland

My most favourite place we wined and dined at was The Sugar Club. The food, wine, cocktails and views were stunning! When ordering, you choose a number of small dishes from the menu – rather like a mini degustation, but one you create yourself. Our waiter recommended that we select three or four small savoury dishes and, to round off our meal, a delicious dessert. Check out the photos below:

The Skycity Grand Hotel is across the road from the SKYCITY Auckland Entertainment Center and Sky Tower. The tallest man-made structure in New Zealand, Sky Tower, has three viewing platforms, an upscale restaurant, coffee shop, and a 360-degree revolving restaurant. Wearing a full-body harness with safety lines, visitors can walk around the edge of a platform surrounding the tower or base jump by wire off the platform instead (we just watched them while pigging out on yummy food and cocktails!).

We also ate at a place nearby called Depot, which I would highly recommend!

Most of the cooking at Depot is over charcoal or hard wood so there’s a real succulence to the flavours. I would suggest that you order a selection of small plates and pass them around your table to share. Try the freshly shucked oysters. Then there’s the wine list – small, but perfectly formed, with some amazing wines to try.
