Sisterhood Series: A catch up with Kerry Martin

Today I am excited to welcome the lovely Kerry Martin to the TWH Sisterhood! Kerry is a pet photographer from Melbourne, she has her own photographic studio and also runs the cutest Aussie Snow Dog Retreats.

Kerry believes that perfect moments with those we love make it all worthwhile; in karma and kismet; that everyone should travel to broaden their mind; and that the journey itself is often the reward. Read on to find out more..

Tell us a bit about yourself… how did you first become interested in photography?

Heya, I’m the “Top Dog” behind Akemi Photography and Puppy Tales.

Akemi Photography specialises in photographing pets and their people.  Our photos capture what it is that people love most about their pets, the connection that they have to create stunning photo artwork that will be proudly displayed and is a lasting tribute to pets who sadly won’t be with us as long as we’d like.  The Aussie Snow Dog Retreats are one of our unique photography experiences and those that have joined have love them.  These retreats offer dog lovers the ultimate getaway! Just imagine the fun of your dog frolicking in the snow, and then imagine those moments, captured for you to have, forever!  It’s such fun and an incredible time away with beloved dogs!

Puppy Tales is a popular Dog blog – it’s devoted to the promotion of wonderful relationships between dogs and people. With Puppy Tales we want to help you live the best life with your dogs!

Lets’s settle this debate.. cats or dogs?

Sorry but I won’t be settling this!  As fur-mum to two dogs and two cats, I love both!  Each brings fun and companionship to our lives and I love each of mine to bits.  I love that dogs encourage us to head outdoors, to play and that they can accompany us many places, including on holidays.  With cats I love their quiet companionship (mine sit next to the computer as I work) and the inquisitive way they investigate or play.  I’m an animal lover – dogs and cats both give great snuggles on the couch at the end of the day!

What is your photography philosophy?

Pets are absolutely part of the family!  I completely get that they sleep on the bed with you and spending time with them is the highlight of any day.  And that’s why we’ve specialised as we have in our photography.

I also believe that the photography experience is about the person and/or their pet that’s being photographed.  The photography experience needs to be individual and personal so that’s it a reflection of those in front of the camera. Through our considered design consultation we create the perfect photography experience and this allows us deliver incredibly meaningful photos.

What challenges have you faced while running your own business and how have they shaped you as a person today?

That’s a great question. There’s a lot of challenges in business but identifying how they’ve shaped you is a little harder!  I think for me, as an introverted personality, the frequent need to step outside my comfort zone is a challenge. It’s through this though that opportunities are created and relationships are formed and these are so important in business.  Each time you step outside your comfort zone you grow into that space. The irony though is that there’s always a new area of discomfort ahead!  So I guess you could say “embrace the discomfort!”

What has been the most rewarding thing that has come from running your own business?

Absolutely the incredible people and pets that I get to meet.  It feels strange to call a day in the studio a job or work because it’s just so much fun!  Furkid cuddles during a photography session are the best!

Life motto?

I’ve always loved the saying that the “journey is the destination”.  It fits both as someone who loves to travel and experience but also is a great reminder in so many aspects of life, including in business.  I believe that we learn and grow through the experiences we have (good and bad!) and it can be handy too, when something doesn’t go as you’d like that it’s all part of the journey, part of something more.

What’s next for Akemi Photography?

We’re always thinking up new and fun ways to capture and celebrate the pets in our lives.  We’re looking at other incredible retreat destinations for different seasons of the year and we’ve recently introduced the ‘Puppy Tales’ package which capture puppies several times over their first year!  Our first puppies in this are coming up to their first birthday so we’ll very soon have gorgeous artwork of their growth and adorable-ness to show off!

What advice would you give to young women who are wanting to start their own business?

Find your passion!  It’s not easy to start and grow your own business.  There are very (very, very!) few overnight successes and with most apparent overnight successes have been working hard for a considerable time prior!  It takes stepping outside your comfort zone, dedication, self belief and lots of work, effort and ‘hussle’ – that’s only possible if you love what it is you’re doing!
