Attention Melbourne: A quirky and kitschy exhibition is coming is coming your way next month – It’s called Sans Souci.
Sans Souci is an exploration of Australiana by six amazing emerging artists from intersecting craft backgrounds and will be held at Little Woods Gallery in Collingwood from Nov 6th – November 30th.
Inspired by kitschy souvenirs of the past and Australian icons, the works by artists Edith Rewa Barrett, Loredana Camarata, Megan McNeill, Stephanie Rushworth, Esther Sandler and Tara Whalley will be on show for all of Melbourne to see.
The showing celebrates the notion of handmade objects, challenging the idea of mass-produced objects.
A trace of the handmade is evident throughout the exhibition, from Tara Whalley’s hand-painted and sewn soft textile keepsakes to Esther Sandler’s imperfectly hand-built ceramic souvenir spoons and trinkets.
Hours of humble hand-workmanship are celebrated in Megan McNeill’s latch hooked welcome mat and the intricate, illustrations by Edith Rewa Barrett that parallel botanical illustrations.
Then, bridging the gap between the handmade and mechanised, Loredana Camarata’s digitally printed and embroidered wall hanging and Stephanie Rushworth’s machine embroidered patches demonstrate a creative fusing of past and future technologies.
Sounds pretty amazing doesn’t it?!
