Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS arrived at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre on 18th December 2015. I headed along to the opening gala night and was blown away by how great it was! I am one of the few people who had never seen CATS before and I’m so glad I finally got to see it, the costumes, acrobatics, singing, acting and music was truly breath-taking.
Australia’s very own Delta Goodrem played the coveted role of Grizabella and sang Memory, one of the most well-known songs of all time. I thought Delta played the role well and she completely aced the song “Memory” (with a standing ovation!) however, I do wish her costume, make-up and mannerisms were more “worn-out” like the old worn out glamour cat should be.
My favourite character of this hit revival had to be Daniel Assetta who played the rapping ‘street cat’ Rum Tum Tugger, he performed some serious break-dancing moves and amazing vocals that demanded your attention. He was hilarious and I found myself fixed on his character each time he stepped on stage – 10/10 performance!
For those of you haven’t seen CATS here’s a really quick run down of what the show is about:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junk yard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
I highly recommend checking out CATS for yourself if you are in Melbourne! Click on the links below to find out more information or book your own tickets:
